IgrewupinasmalltowninruralNorthCarolina.Myfatherworkedinamillallhislife,andIwillneverforgetthemenandwomenwhoworkedwithhim.Theyhadlintintheirhairandgreaseontheirfaces.Theyworkedhardandtriedtoputalittlesomethingawayeveryweeksotheirkidsandtheirgrandkidscouldhaveabetterlife.Theyarejustliketheautoworkers,officeworkers,teachers,andshopkeepersonMainStreetsallacrossAmerica.

Mymotherhadanumberofjobs.Herlastjobwasworkingatthepostofficesomyparentscouldhavehealthcare.Andsheownedherownsmallbusiness—refinishingfurnituretohelppayformegotocollege.

Ihavehadsuchincredibleopportunitiesinmylife,andIwasblessedtobethefirstpersoninmyfamilytogotocollege.Iworkedmywaythrough,andIhavehadopportunitieswaybeyondwhatIcouldhaveeverimagined.

Andtheheartofthiscampaign—yourcampaign—istomakesurethateveryonehasthosesameopportunitiesthatIhadgrowingup—nomatterwhereyoulive,whoyourfamilyis,orwhatthecolorofyourskinis.ThisistheAmericawebelievein.

ThisisnotanAfrican-Americanissue,notaLatinoissue,notanAsian-Americanissue,thisisanAmericanissue.It''''saboutwhoweare,whatourvaluesare,whatkindofcountrywewanttolivein.

WhatJohnandIwant—whatweallwant—isforourchildrenandourgrandchildrentobethefirstgenerationstogrowupinanAmericathat''''snolongerdividedbyrace.
